M&L webinar: Measuring the success of educational video with learning analytics

Thursday 19 January 2017 - 16.00 CET

Watch the recording.

Experienced practitioners talk about how they are using user generated data to analyse the success or otherwise of video that is being used in a learning context.

Frans van der Sluis, Leiden University, The Netherlands

Frans van der Sluis is an inter-disciplinary scientist who combines his background in cognitive psychology and computer science to study how humans interact with and learn from information. In his PhD (2013) he discovered, using a series of novel algorithms, that textual complexity is one of the key factors explaining when people become interested in a text. He now continues this line of research for online learning at the Online Learning Lab of Leiden University, using innovative learning analytics for a better learning experience and outcome. Building on a strong multi-disciplinary background, he takes on the challenge of creating a next generation of information technology that seamlessly connects with its users.

Tim van der Zee, Leiden University, The Netherlands

In 2015 Tim started as a PhD candidate at Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON). Earlier he obtained a Masters in Human Learning and Performance psychology. He studies how teachers of open online education can give high quality instruction, and focusses specifically on increasing the instructional design quality and educational value of online videos. His position is funded by CEL (Centre of Education and Learning), a collaboration between the universities of Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam.

Torgeir Christiansen, University of Oslo, Norway

Torgeir Christiansen is an experienced Senior ICT Engineer at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Oslo. He is also Head of Technical support for the Teaching Learning Video lab, which offers eInfrastructure for the processing and analysing of digital video data for both research and educational purposes. As Head of Technical he has been in charge of the development of the Lab, which makes it possible for a high number of researchers to use and work on video data for a number of purposes relevant for the learning sciences. Torgeir also participates in several research-projects at the department and contributes therefore to the development of new knowledge about how to collect video data, large scale storage solutions and data logging.
